MACKEY SQ2 DESIGN TAKES TOP STOL HONORS AT VALDEZ AIR SHOW

Stol awards, Mackey SQ2, Stolquest, Wayne MackeyCongratulations to Wayne Mackey for winning the 2008 Short Takeoff and Landing competition in the experimental category at the “May Day” Fly-In & Air Show in Valdez, Alaska.

Wayne Mackey’s new SQ2 design by Stolquest, which is now being offered exclusively for sale as a Super Cub kit plane manufactured by Backcountry Super Cubs www.supercub.com

Won the experimental category with an incredible takeoff distance of 49 feet, and an equally impressive landing distance of 71 feet.

This unprecedented level of performance is a result of Wayne’s innovative design, which includes self-castering slats on the leading edges. Without any mechanical input from the pilot, these slats pivot open at high angles of attack forcing air over the top of the wing, and pivot closed during cruise with little to no effect on cruise speed. The slats significantly improve control effectiveness during slow flight, and they dramatically reduce stall speed and negative stall characteristics (Wayne says the wing is virtually unstallable, but we’ll let you see for yourself so you know it’s not too good to be true!).

In addition to the wing slats, the SQ2 also represents Wayne’s 30-year career of continually making the Super Cub just a little bit better. Wayne has lightened the airframe while still maintaining strength. He has lowered the engine mount about 3 inches, incorporating Mark Englerth’s Thrust line design, with a new sleek composite cowling that results in tremendous forward visibility. The SQ2 comes with 3” extended gear to maintain prop clearance. This modification allows for a better angle of attack for shorter takeoff distances.

In the kit form currently for sale through Turbine Cubs of Wyoming, LLC, Wayne’s SQ2 was design-modified so that it could be assembled with a 0-235 through O-360 engines, and 850 tires and still have an empty weight of about 1,100 lbs with recommended gross of 2,000 lbs. This configuration will cruise equal to or faster than a standard Cub and maintain flight down to about 20 mph in ground effect. The standard configuration allows for 48 gallons of fuel capacity. The winning configuration at Valdez had 180 hp with 35” Alaska Bush Wheel tires and cruised at 95 mph during Wayne’s flight to Valdez from the Lower 48. This robust design also allows for the higher hp engines of the same weight, if desired.
